Lara Elis Alberici Delsin

PhD
Medical Writer, IC Axon, Quebec
BIOGRAPHY: I began my academic journey in a hospital setting, where I handled patient-sensitive information and wrote regulatory documents for ethical committees, necessary for the development of my Master’s project on pediatric oncology. During my PhD, I expanded my expertise in cancer cellular biology, with a focus on the metastatic process.

Throughout my career, I have engaged in various teaching and science communication initiatives, equipping me with the skills necessary for a successful transition to medical writing. Today, I develop educational materials for the pharmaceutical industry, delving into diverse disease states, treatment landscapes, clinical guidelines, and clinical trials protocols.

What is your interest in clinical trials?
• Clinical trials are the direct point of contact between the advances in scientific research and the patients' care. Throughout my academic journey, I have viewed clinical trials as the direct implication of my bench work. Now, as a medical writer, I rely on clinical studies as the starting point of my work: they are reliable studies I can use to communicate treatment advancements and facilitate the dissemination of medical information to diverse audiences.

Why do you think clinical trials are important?
• Clinical trials are important for advancing medicine, bridging scientific innovation and practical application. They can significantly impact patient's lives by providing access to cutting-edge therapies. With the advancing discussions around IDEA, I believe there's a valuable opportunity to enhance how clinical trials are designed and conducted, improving representativeness and making a more meaningful impact in healthcare.

What is your personal philosophy about clinical trial training specifically or mentorship in general?
• I believe the mentor-mentee relationship should be a meaningful exchange where both parties are committed to a common goal. Effective mentorship includes offering guidance, sharing experiences and resources, and giving constructive feedback. Active listening, empathy, trust and action are key to success.

FUN FACT: I love different types of art, including dancing, drawing, painting, and embroidery. I'm always curious to learn something new and fun!
